Stuck Between Riots? Do these 7 things to defend yourself and your Family

Updated: May 9, 2020

Amid the tensions rising due to the #Delhiriots, concerns arise about the right to self defense in case such situations arise again.

1. Why?

In the alarming situations the country is currently in and the over-restrictive Arms Act laws, the residents seldom find themselves helpless being unable to defend themselves against the anti-social elements who might be barging into homes, raping women and burning the structures and vehicles, kidnapping and killing people (as we saw in Delhi violence). Such situations are likely to arise more frequently in near future due to far more attempts to instigate the Muslim and SC communities in India by rogue politicians and fake liberals giving hate speeches like cutting off chicken's neck, supporting terrorists and instigating violence in name of pseudo-secularism than ever before.

2. Laws

"IPC Section 96 to 106 of the penal code states the law relating to the right of private defence of person and property. The provisions contained in these sections give authority to a man to use necessary force against an assailant or wrong-doer for the purpose of protecting one’s own body and property as also another’s body and property when immediate aid from the state machinery is not readily available and in so doing he is not answerable in law for his deeds. Section 97 says that the right of private defence is of 2 types: (i) Right of private defence of body, (ii) Right of private defence of property."(**)

You have the right to self defense, and getting scared of the situation is not an option but to get ready, prepare for the worst especially if you live in specific areas where violence is likely to erupt and you know the gut feeling of population in your neighborhood.

3. So what can I do?

You must develop good relations within your neighborhood if you know you're living in a problematic area. Do have your group of friends and family friends living nearby. Organise yourselves into a club if you don't have any at colony level. Have fun, parties and help each other as we Indians always do. Diplomatic solutions are always the best.

There's not much you can do when mob of hundreds of people are looting the households. But you have your family, kids, parents at home and certainly you would (and should be willing to) do anything to protect them from harm. The criminals are outside, banging your door to open and of course you can't wait for police. We saw what happened to Kashmiri Pandits in 1990, and make sure that won't happen with you.

Here we give you some good tips for tactical self defense in such situations.

1. Situational Awareness is a must; you're running out of time. Take the vulnerable (kids, oldies, sick) to the safest location in your home and contact your local sources (colony club, committee, family friends) for possible safehouse. If your home is quite small, hide them at the roof. If you have ample time, get out of the location immediately in your car or any vehicle.

2. Tell one person around you to call the police while you prepare for the defenses.

What if you didn't know it was happening all of a sudden and couldn't get out?

3. Lock the doors. Put the heaviest of furniture behind the door so it won't open at all. Drag the sofa, dining table and almirah and pile em at the door. The rioters will not enter in if they see quite much hassle in getting in your home, and leave for another easier entry. Just after the furniture at the door put few additional chairs in upside down position so their legs would be up and facing the attacker, in case he enters would be wounded by the legs of upside down chairs. Do not forget to spill cooking oil on the entry to decrease friction and let them slip away in case they enter. Lock all your essentials (money, gold) in safes and hide them deep inside your home at the place you know they won't find it. Keep some money in hand for negotiations.

4. Equipment: Quick. Think, think, think. You have a licensed firearm in your home? Grab that along with all the ammunition you have. If not, go grab the kitchen knife and lathi/rod (each household has this stuff). You can also get a steel rod by breaking the curtain apparatus. You can even use a pen as stabbing weapon. You must have a fire extinguisher at home. Also, remember to train with your weapon to use it effectively in combat. Its no use to have a licensed firearm when you don't know how to use that effectively.

5. Assess your resources: Call your neighbours and organise in a group. More manpower always help, as they will also be suffering the same situation like you in the locality. Call as many people around you as you can, who can help.

6. If they are in the house despite all your preparations, its all up on you. Assess the situation and if the situation allows, then negotiate with them to spare your life for money. Talk clever with them, for example hinting most of the money is in bank accounts they might take the cash available in either form. If situation doesn't allow for negotiations, try hiding until you can engage.

7. DO NOT ENGAGE (fight) DIRECTLY. If you do not have sufficient manpower, do not engage directly with the rioters. They are far greater in number and will certainly kill you if you engage directly. Hide with your weapon until the right moment and only engage them if they are going to hurt your family or loved ones. Money can be brought back, not life. Do not engage if there are more than two hostiles until very necessary.
